Contains: Urea is one of the substances that the skin produces itself to regulate its moisture content and is a 'natural moisturizing agent' (NMF). Urea is hygroscopic and binds water in the upper layer of the skin, the stratum corneum. Urea is also keratolytic, which means that it breaks the bonds between dead skin cells, causing sloughing and softening of the skin surface. Because urea is a skin-specific substance, it is very well tolerated, even by people with very dry skin. Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMF): are a variety of water soluble compounds like amino acids, Urea, and Lactic Acid which naturally occur in the stratum corneum (outer layer of the epidermis). They increase the water-binding capacity of the skin, keeping it well hydrated. Ceramides: are produced by the skin itself as a natural protective barrier to prevent moisture loss through evaporation and to block irritants that can cause inflammation and itching. A decrease in ceramide levels in the skin can lead to dryness and irritation.
